Discussion: Thinking with Objects about Affect

Affecting Presence Curator Paul R. Davis leads a discussion about the affective visual and cultural power of work in the exhibition. Patrick McNaughton, chancellor’s professor of African Art History at Indiana University, Bloomington, has received awards from the Guggenheim Foundation and the NEA. His writings on African expressive culture include the seminal The Mande Blacksmiths: Knowledge, Power, and Art in West Africa (1988). Christina Hellmich, curator in charge of the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas at the de Young Museum, San Francisco, since 2011 organized the exhibition Royal Hawaiian Featherwork Nā Hulu Ali‘I at the de Young through February 26, 2016.
