West African Film Festival Screening: “El Maestro”

The West African Film Festival of Houston and the Menil Collection copresent a screening of El Maestro, 2020. The French-language documentary film tells the story of the Afro-Cuban music singer Laba Sosseh (1943-2007), who was born in the coastal West African country of The Gambia. Archival imagery and colorful interviews trace the journey of this atypical artist and musician, whose career as a “salsero” beginning in the 1960s took him to Dakar, Abidjan, and New York.

El Maestro is presented as part of the 2022 West African Film Festival. You can find more information about the festival here.

Attending the program:

This program takes place in the main building, located at 1533 Sul Ross St. All visitors are required to wear masks that cover their nose and mouth while inside of our art buildings. Further information regarding accessibility and parking can be found here.
