Book Launch and Discussion: Cy Twombly, Treatise on the Veil, 1970

The Menil Collection’s recent publication, Cy Twombly: Treatise on the Veil, 1970, explores one of the American artist’s largest paintings—the second version of his Treatise on the Veil. Cy Twombly (1928 –2011) created the 33-foot long painting, which is part of the Menil’s permanent collection, during a short period of focused creativity along with more than a dozen drawings. The new book examines these works in relation to Twombly’s oeuvre, and his contemporaneous explorations of time, the Orpheus myth, and music, among other themes that influenced this epic work.

Michelle White, Senior Curator of the Menil Collection, and Sarah Rothenberg, Artistic Director of Da Camera, who each contributed essays to the book, will discuss the painting in the Menil’s contemporary galleries, where it is currently on view. Their talks will be followed by a presentation on the making of the book with the Menil’s Director of Publishing, Joseph N. Newland. Copies of the book will be available for sale during the reception.

This program is free and open to the public; limited seating will be available on a first-come first-serve basis. Further information regarding accessibility and parking can be found here.
