One Whom Some Were Following: The Steins and Picasso Before Fame

Menil director Rebecca Rabinow was co-curator of the 2012 exhibition The Steins Collect: Matisse, Picasso, and the Parisian Avant-Garde and a principal contributor to the accompanying publication. Drawing on her extensive knowledge of the subject matter, Rabinow explores the fascinating relationship between Pablo Picasso and the American expatriate siblings Leo and Gertrude Stein. The Steins moved to Paris in 1903 to pursue their careers and soon befriended scores of young artists, including Picasso. The three remained close as Picasso embarked on one of the most creative periods of his career.
