Specificities and details from her everyday spaces have informed Sylvia Plimack Mangold’s art for decades. In 1975, Mangold began including measuring sticks in her work. Always drawn to scale in her art, the rulers here are oriented not only to measure the length of the paper itself, but also to highlight the same length receding in perspective into the composition; the two never align. Mangold’s techniques call attention to how sight is reproduced in images and to our own personal understanding of space.
