In their own words, get to know some of our young collectors, art enthusiasts, and patrons and learn what the Menil Contemporaries means to them.
How did you first find out about the Menil?
“I love the arts and go to galleries and museums all the time. The Menil is my favorite. I moved here seven years ago to go to Rice University to study cognitive neuroscience. As soon as I landed I checked out all of the museums. I knew immediately the Menil would be my home away from home.”
What is your favorite place at the Menil?
“I absolutely love the bench outside of the Cy Twombly gallery. I love the location, under a beautiful tree, close to the Main Collection and good for people watching.”
What is the best part of being a member at the Menil?
“I really love the Members Noontime Talks. It is always amazing to me how close you can get to the artwork with the help of a Menil staff member. I am literally able to get inches away from something I’ve been looking at for years. I also love any behind-the-scenes information that deals with operations. Often Noontime Talks focus on technical aspects of the art, what technologies are currently being used and how. Because of my science background I find that really interesting.”
Why do you support the Menil?
“It’s incredibly important that everyone has access to the arts and the Menil has a tremendous collection. I think it is critical to support the mission of the museum.”
What is your typical Menil experience?
“One of my favorite things about the Menil is that I can come alone, with another, or with a whole group, so my experience is different every time. Sometimes I peruse the main building at length, and other times I hop from building to building, enjoying as little as a single work in each structure.“—Stuart
Why do you support the Menil?
“I am struck by the simple profundity that the Menil carries with it. It is extremely important that the Menil is free and there are never lines or overcrowding. I support the Menil in part because it can be seen as a spiritual home for Houstonians across cultures.“—Catherine
Why do you support the Menil?
“I love supporting an institution that I feel represents my values. My understanding is that Dominique and John de Menil envisioned founding an institution for the purpose of honoring human rights, art, and spirituality. I think they succeeded!“—Stuart
What is your favorite place at the Menil?
“I love Menil Park, especially on a nice spring day! I love that there are works sprinkled through the park, including the Heizer earthworks. I am also drawn to the gorgeous oak trees that grace the property. The park just feels like an oasis in the middle of Montrose, but one that isn’t in stark contrast to the surrounding area.“—Catherine
What is your favorite place at the Menil?
“I have always been drawn to the Byzantine Fresco Chapel. I am so pleased that the building was able to support other works since the original frescoes were returned to their country of origin. In its original state, it was one of the most sacred places in the entire city, and it is wonderful that it can continue to house thought provoking works of great significance.“—Stuart
Why do you support the Menil?
“The Menil provides events and a public space, which enrich our community. In addition to getting personal enjoyment from the Menil, I know supporting it supports our community.”
What drew you to the Menil Contemporaries?
“An invitation from a particularly persistent friend four years ago introduced me to the group, but I’ve stayed because of the friendships I’ve developed through it.”
What is your favorite place at the Menil?
“Cy Twombly Gallery. I like to bring out of town guests there, and it becomes a topic of conversation for years.”
What has been your most memorable Menil Contemporaries experience?
“The private reception for Nice. Luc Tuymans organized exclusively for the Contemporaries prior to the public program offered an intimate setting to learn more about the exhibition as well as the artist. The opportunity for such a casual encounter is what makes the Menil and the Contemporaries so special – and this for me is the most important driver for my continued support of this fine institution.”
What is your favorite place at the Menil?
“Richmond Hall is my favorite space at the Menil and is also the location of my favorite Menil Contemporaries event so far: Magrittes & Martinis.”
What is the most rewarding part of being a member at the Menil?
“I have made some fantastic friends at the Menil. Some are still here, some have moved on to different cities. But eventually you get to be a part of a fascinating network that continuously changes over time.”
