Artist Talk: Allison Janae Hamilton

Allison Janae Hamilton delivers an Artist Talk on the occasion of the Menil’s recent acquisition of three of her photographs, two of which are on view in Photography and the Surreal Imagination. Hamilton considers the natural environment to be the central protagonist in the unfolding of historic and contemporary narratives throughout the American South, particularly in the Gulf region. By blending land-centered folklore and personal family narratives, she explores haunting yet epic mythologies that address the social and political concerns of today’s changing southern terrain, including land loss, environmental justice, climate change, and sustainability.

About the artist:
Allison Janae Hamilton (b. 1984) is a visual artist working with photography, video, sculpture, and installation. She was born in Kentucky, raised in Florida, and her maternal family’s farm and homestead lies in the rural flatlands of western Tennessee. Hamilton’s relationship with these locations forms the cornerstone of her artistic practice particularly her interest in the landscape. Solo exhibitions of her work include Pitch at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), North Adams, MA (2018-19); Passage at Atlanta Contemporary, Atlanta, GA (2018); and Wonder Room at Recess, New York, NY (2017). She was a 2013-14 Fellow of the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY), and has been awarded artist residencies at the Studio Museum in Harlem (New York, NY), Recess (New York, NY), and Fundación Botín (Santander, Spain). She lives and works in New York.

This program is free and open to the public. Seating is available on a first-come first-served basis. Further information regarding accessibility and parking can be found here.
