Throughout the year, The Artist's Eye is on the first Sunday of each month (except talks held on the second Sunday of April and July, due to the Easter and Independence Day holidays). A Texas artist talks about works in the Menil Collection from the permanent collection or in a temporary exhibition that has special meaning to him or her. The public is invited to these free, informal gallery discussions, which can be held in any Menil gallery, the library, or building (or outdoor space) of the artist’s choosing and begin at 3 p.m.

Curtis Gannon on Jasper Johns

Born in London, Ontario, Canada, in 1974, Curtis Gannon was raised in a small south Texas town before moving to Houston. He received a master’s degree in Painting at San Diego State University. His work explores the imagery of American action comics through drawing, collage, and plexiglass constructions.

Bert Samples on a Bedu Mask from Côte d'Ivoire

Bert Samples is a native Houstonian who grew up during the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. He received an M.F.A. at the University of Houston, and a Core Fellowship at the Glassell School of Art. A founding board member of Project Row Houses, he has exhibited in Texas, Louisiana, and New York. His Houston performances and installations include those at the Houston Intercontinental Airport and the University of Houston Downtown.

 

Ebony Porter on the Menil Collection Campus

Ebony Porter holds a BA in Art History and a BA in English from Texas State University-San Marcos. Her work has been exhibited across Texas and her writing has been published in both local and international publications. Working in painting, collage, and video, her practice concentrates on simplicity, beauty, and form. Originally from Australia, she currently lives and works in Houston.

 

Allison Hunter on Richard Serra

Allison Hunter is a visual artist who has worked in photography, video, drawing, sculpture, and installation. She has an MFA from the Cantonal Art School of Lausanne, Switzerland, and an MFA in video from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Hunter’s photographs are in several museum collections. Her work has been included in exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe and in solo exhibitions at Women & Their Work (Austin) and DiverseWorks (Houston).

 

Beth Secor on Danny Lyon

Native Houstonian Beth Secor is an artist, writer, and curator with a BFA in Printmaking and an MFA in Painting from the University of Houston. She teaches at several institutions including UH Downtown, Houston Community College, and the Glassell School of Art. Her work can be found in both private and public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Museum of Texas Tech University. She writes for Glasstire.com and Houston Arts and Culture Magazine.
