Chief Curator, Menil Drawing Institute
The Menil Collection seeks a Chief Curator, Menil Drawing Institute dedicated to exhibition programing, collection growth, and management of the Menil drawing collection and its operations and administration. The Chief Curator shall, through major research initiatives, establish an international reputation for this new building on the campus.
The Chief Curator’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, leading all efforts related to collection management in an interim Drawing Institute facility and in anticipation of a future building including attention to proper storage, conservation needs, and research on the collection incorporating new information into exhibitions and publications. The Chief Curator will work closely with the director and curatorial team of the Menil Collection to develop a strategic plan for the expansion of the collection as well as establish and lead the Menil Drawing Institute Advisory Committee, a support group for drawing acquisitions. The Chief Curator will work with the director, deputy director/COO, and architects to help form world-class facility for drawings. In addition, the Chief Curator will serve as spokesperson for the Menil Drawing Institute, communicating the Drawing Institute’s mission and goals both internally and externally. With the Advancement Department the Chief Curator will play a leading role in the cultivation and solicitation of major donations and bequests. The Chief Curator acts a senior leader within the Menil Collection adding expertise, guidance, and collegial participation in the discussion formulations, and implementation of policies, procedures, and activities of the organization. This position reports to the director of the Menil Collection and Foundation, supervises all Drawing Institute staff and the staff of Jasper Johns Catalogue Raisonné of Drawings.
Considered one of the most important privately assembled collections of the twentieth century, the Menil Collection houses approximately seventeen thousand paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, and rare books. Masterpieces from antiquity, Byzantium and the medieval period, the cultures of Africa, Oceania, and the American Pacific Northwest and the twentieth century, including significant surrealist and post World War II holdings, are particularly well represented.
Required qualifications include an advanced degree (PhD preferred) in art history or related field. Specialized knowledge of drawings and 20th century and contemporary art. International reputation for work with drawings. Ten years museum curatorial experience. Track record of exhibitions and publications. Ability to work in a collaborative environment. Must be a passionate and energetic person with the ability to manage, research, position, exhibit, and develop an important collection. Must have the demonstrated interest and ability to share the collection with diverse audiences and to build a positive image and strong relationships for the Menil Collection.
